Senior Data Engineer
Are you our next Senior Data Engineer?
If you’re a Senior/Lead Data or Backend Engineer passionate about a chance to contribute to the technical decisions and data infrastructure around the IoT products providing a greener, fault-free future for our railways, this role might be a great fit for you!
About us
CEMIT is a data intelligence company with ambitions to lead a digital transformation of the railway industry globally. As a scale-up supported by top-tier investors, we are a dynamic and customer-centric organization with R&D at the core of our DNA. Our platform collects data from railway infrastructure and uses ML and analytics to provide real-time insight into the health of the trains and tracks to drastically improve maintenance efficiency and rail uptime. Together we are leading an intelligent shift that will increase the reliability, affordability, and efficiency of rail transportation, enabling a greener future.
Today we collect data from more than 30,000 km of railway every day, positioning us at the forefront of data intelligence for the railway industry. By winning Eurostars in 2022 we were recognized as the most innovative SME in Europe amongst 432 finalists.
We are an international team with headquarters in Skien, Norway, and offices in Oslo.
About the role
We are now seeking a Senior Data Engineer with expertise in creating a scalable and robust data platform alongside creating some APIs to expose data pipelines, models, and insights to other systems. We already have a strong product in the market with customers and users on three continents. However, as we are growing from a startup of 17 people to a global SaaS company, we need to further enhance our data-heavy platform. Therefore, we are looking for a new team member to help us enable our vision for future data intelligence in the railway industry. In this role, you'll work closely with a small, cross-functional team to define, build, and improve solutions, ensuring a smooth, end-to-end user experience. If you're passionate about data and want to help shape the future of railway tech, we’d love to have you onboard!
Key tasks & responsibilities
- Design and maintain scalable data pipelines to ingest high-volume IoT data, streaming platforms and similar technologies.
- Collaborate with the data science team to support real-time data processing and model training workflows in platforms like Databricks.
- Work with TimescaleDB and optimize databases for terabyte-scale time-series data.
- Ensure seamless integration of IoT telemetry and with the data platform.
- Manage cloud infrastructure on Azure, leveraging Infrastructure as Code, and using tools like Docker for scalable deployment.
- Monitor and optimize data pipelines for performance, costs, scalability, and reliability.
- Implement technologies to manage and optimize processes around data governance, quality checks, and system monitoring.
- Document systems and processes, and communicate effectively with cross-functional teams.
Requirements
To thrive in this role, you will need to demonstrate technical excellence, proactive problem-solving, and experience building scalable, data-centric solutions. The ideal candidate will have:
- 5+ years of experience in data engineering, focusing on high-volume data pipelines and real-time processing.
- Experience with event streaming platforms for large-scale data ingestion.
- Proficiency in time-series databases handling terabyte-scale datasets - we use TimescaleDB.
- Hands-on experience with Python writing production level code for data processing and AI/ML model deployment (e.g., MLflow, Airflow, PySpark, polars).
- Experience with creating APIs to expose data pipelines, models, and insights to other systems - experience with frameworks like FastAPI is a plus.
- Solid knowledge of cloud infrastructure services, IaC tools like Terraform, and Docker for containerized deployments.
- Excellent communication and documentation skills for cross-functional collaboration.
Due to the tasks you will handle in this position, it will be a huge bonus if you also have:
- Familiarity with MQTT and IoT data ingestion, including IoT-fleet management.
- Experience with modelling complex data and defining pipelines with appropriate frameworks like DBT.
What we offer you:
- A competitive compensation package that reflects your experience, knowledge, and contribution to the company spanning base salary, bonus, share options, 5% pension, and a great insurance policy.
- A unique opportunity to influence the future direction of the railway industry, making some of our most sustainable forms of transport more competitive and future-proof.
- Ability to apply and grow your skills in a varied real-life environment with a cross-functional team.
- Work with modern technology, including state-of-the-art IoT-based data collection and data analytics tools.
- Be part of an early-stage scale-up journey and greatly influence what we build and how we do it.
- A dynamic, international, and supportive work environment with a focus on work-life balance and flexible home office arrangements.
